Verbal Ability - Question Of The Day

Ever since pagers and cell phones have started becoming popular, they have been making mass appearances in school and college campuses. Many parents and teachers have been worried about this trend and are mulling over banning new devices. The main cause of concern is that the youngsters will use this new technology to cheat during tests and exams.

Which of the following statements, if true, best weakens the argument presented in this passage?

OPTIONS

1) In recent years, more students are using pagers instead of cell phones.

2) A study has shown that most students use cell phones for purposes other than just making phone calls.

3) A study has shown that rich students can afford the latest models of cell phones and pagers are really outdated.

4) Studies have found that cheating leads to further failures in life, whether it is due to cell phones or pagers.

5) Absence of Cell phones and pagers does not guarantee cheating-free exams.

Solution

The main idea presented in the passage is that youngsters will use cellphones to cheat during exams and so parents and teachers want to ban its use.

Option 1 will not weaken the argument- the focus is on technology.

Option 2 does not show that they will not use for cheating.

Options 3 and 4 are tangential to the argument of the passage.

Option 5 brings out the issue that even if they are banned, cheating would continue.

Hence, the correct answer is option 5.
