2. Size of your batch: Always go for a small batch. Enquire thoroughly about the size of the batch. Many coaching institutes have huge batches and so what suffers is individual attention. If there are many students in a class, then you will not get personal attention or you may not get time to get your doubts resolved.
   
3. Study Material: Every coaching institute will provide you with basic study material. You should go through the material to decide if it's comprehensive or not. The kind of study material will help you judge about the centre's worthiness.
   
   
4. Location: Always go for a location that is nearer to your home. Travelling for hours to reach the class will not be very useful if you aren't putting in the effort on your own as well. Also, you might lose motivation in a few days if the place is situated too far away.
   
5. Practice Tests: The number of simulated tests that are taken in a proctored environment is an important factor. Taking such mock tests will prepare you for the final exam day. Ask the institute about their tie-ups with the various colleges, or cyber cafes, and whether there are any hindrances they face while taking the test. Make sure that you are able to take the test in a proctored environment, where you don't face any distraction. You need to know if they will give you also give you feedback on the tests, mark you and ask about the cutoffs.
   
6. Quality of tests: Go for an institute where there are more test takers as it will help you to know where you stand. However, don't go by tall claims made by institutes regarding the number of test takers. You need to check as they could dupe you.

MBA or Specialized Degree?

As we recruit prospective MBA students from around the world, a question we hear a lot at The MBA Tour is whether it is better to get a specialized masters degree (MSc in Finance or an MSc in Technology and Innovation, for example) or an MBA.  This is an important question to consider as these are distinctly different degree programs and lead to very different career paths.

The MBA is a professional degree and the program content emphasizes practical application.  The program of study emphasizes general management skills.  MBA programs rarely accept individuals directly after graduation from university as the requirements of the coursework presume that students have faced the practical challenges of the work environment.  In order to participate in class, on study teams, and to complete assignments, students are expected to draw on their own personal experience. 

Learning is often experiential with a lot of the work completed in multi-national and professionally diverse teams.  MBA graduates often comment that they learn as much (if not more!) from their peers as they do from their professors.

People choose the MBA for many reasons.  Most often, people need to develop a range of management skills in order to assume more responsibility within an organization.  The broader understanding of different business functions makes it possible to supervise and coordinate the work of other people and other units.  Many students who enroll in MBA programs have backgrounds in engineering and technology, but it is not uncommon for an MBA class to also include journalists, lawyers, doctors, musicians, bankers, and teachers.  The MBA program develops specific functional skills (accounting, strategic planning, financial management, project management) and critical soft skills (communication, negotiation, human resource management) that senior managers need in any type of organization. 

In contrast, the specialized MS is a very different program.  These programs are very focused and often require a university degree in the same area.  The classes required to complete this type of masters are almost all in a single area such as finance, accounting, operations, corporate communications, etc.  People who enter these programs have (typically) decided on a narrower career path than people who chose to earn an MBA.  There is often more emphasis on theoretical knowledge and research.

The specialized degrees are attractive to some students because they admit candidates directly after university graduation.  It is important to keep in mind that although entering graduate school directly might be very appealing, the opportunities that follow this type of masters program are different than those that follow an MBA. 

The specialized masters is a perfect option for someone who is confident that he or she will remain in the same industry sector and function long-term.  The MBA is a better option for people looking for the flexibility to work in different sectors and different types of organizations.

Appropriate Material - Search and Go for it :-

As far as the preparation material for CAT is concerned at this stage, you are suggested to stick to the basic reference material on Verbal Ability you have. Reading/Comprehension skills can be honed by regular reading of magazines and newspapers.  Purposeful practice through the tests will help you to improve your verbal skills.

It will be better if you could buy a vocabulary book as these usually have exercises in the end which help you to reinforce your vocabulary.

You are also suggested to read out loud. The more you read, more and faster you will learn. Reading materials from different sources is always advisable. This will lead to the deep-processing of words intuitively. This word - Deep-processing, implies that these words become a part of you, almost as your native language is a part of you.

Word Power - Improve It:-

For improving your vocabulary you should be able to understand the meaning of every new word that comes across to you. When you come across words of which you do not know the meaning, you can figure out the meaning from the context in which it is used. You can then refer the dictionary to find the exact meaning. You should try to get the meaning of the word by analyzing the context. Try to make some sense out of them through the context they are used in. Only the words that you come across regularly should be referred to the dictionary. Noting down the words on a paper gives great results as this aids to remember the words for longer period.

Using flash cards can also help you in learning new words. Write target words and phrases on the cards. As you review the list, separate the words in two piles; those you understand and those you do not. Keep going through the yet-unlearned words until you attain a mastery of them. You can do that by learning the root of the words which will help you remember what you have learned. Keep a notebook to help you remember the words that you have learned.

Reading Comprehension- Strategies for it :-

Before we proceed, let us answer the basic question:

What is reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension (RC) is the ability to read and understand unfamiliar materials and to answer questions about them. You will be presented with passages drawn from a variety of subject areas, including humanities, the sciences, latest happenings in society etc. The questions will ask you to analyze what is stated in the passage and to identify underlying assumptions and implications.

Most of you face the question:-

 How to answer the questions of long RC passages in a short span of time?

 If it is a long passage, everyone else will take time. What you need to do is to comprehend it fast, rather than reading it fast. Your focus while reading should be NOT to READ fast but to COMPREHEND fast.

In order to tackle long RC passages, practice is the key. Try to get more practice in reading, particularly in reading dense materials fast. Learn to look at each question in the exam from first principles. Timing is also suggested while reading the passages. When you are starting out with your RC preparation, cut out passages, which have a similar style and are more or less of equal length. Determine your reading speed on day one. Let’s say it is 150 words per minute. Read at that speed for sometime, say a week or something and after that, stretch yourself by increasing time constraints, say 150 words per 45 seconds.

How to Deal with RCs for CAT 2010 :-

Another important concern while dealing with RCs in the computer-based test is that you may find it difficult to read from the computer screen. Moreover, you cannot underline or mark points in this format of online CAT exam.

Experts suggest that if you practice reading more articles and news on your computer and take notes in your rough paper (to be provided in the online CAT exam) while reading it, you will be better equipped.

Focus on comprehending the passage and not on speed reading. You may make a note of important points as you read on the rough paper provided. This will help you answer the questions faster and minimize the time required to browse through a passage every time you answer a question.

The positive side of computer-based CAT is that the length of the passages may not exceed 600 to 700 words.

RC passages - Making The Appropriate Choice:-

Among the various passages, you need to select those passages which will be easier for you to answer.

The topic of the passage, whether it is to your liking or not; question patterns, whether they are direct or twisted are some of the important factors that you should keep in mind. The ratio of the length of the passages and the number of questions is another important factor. A long passage with few questions will pay little dividend in relation to the time one puts in.

The second Management Aptitude Test (MAT) of the year 2011 is scheduled to be held on Sunday, May 1, 2011 and Saturday, May 7, 2011. The exam will be held in both paper pencil format and computer based format.

The entrance exam registration process is going to end soon. If you are opting for the MAT of May 2011, it is high time that you register for the exam. The last date of the sale of forms is Tuesday, April 12, 2011. The last date to submit the completed application forms is Friday, April 15, 2011.

Application

The application forms are available at select branches of Bank of Baroda, Axis Bank, as well as AIMA Study Center. The application fee is Rs. 1,200. The cost of the MAT Admission Bulletin from AIMA, New Delhi is Rs. 1050. Online application can also be done by visiting www.aima-ind.org/matmay11.

Test Centers

MAT May 2011 will take place in 84 cities in India and two international cities of Dubai and Singapore. However, most of the test centers do not cater to computer based testing. Question: As the Director of SIBM Pune, what are your plans for the development of the renowned institute?

Answer: I want SIBM Pune to be recognized as an international institute with excellence in academics. My major plan for SIBM Pune is to deliver student centric management education and to offer maximum exposure to the students in terms of corporate and social interface.

Question: Coming to the Admissions 2011-13, what is the present status of the admission process at SIBM Pune? When will be the final merit list be declared and when will the session for new admissions start?

Answer: The admission process for 2011-13 batch has been completed and new seats are being filled only against cancellation.  Our academic session will start on June 6, 2011 and induction booklet will be issued to the students in the third week of April 2011. The purpose of this Induction Booklet 2011 is to bring students with varying backgrounds at par or at a basic level of knowledge on common subjects of the MBA program.

Question: What are the highlights of the 2011-13 batch admissions? Has there been any change or development in the curriculum or programs for this batch?

It is a combination of commercial and personal decision. 25 to 30 years is the right age group to move out of industry and complete MBA. Distance MBA can work as additional qualification and cannot be main stream qualification for a new career.

Question: What is the importance of the location of a B-School? Should an MBA aspirant consider location as an important factor while choosing the B-School?

Answer: Location of B-School will matter if it is a residential campus otherwise MBA schools around Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Noida and Bangalore will always bring in more recruiters. These are the hubs of the industry and hence it is always an added advantage to pursue MBA in such locations which will offer you the proximity to the industry and also give you the requisite exposure.

Question: What is your advice to MBA aspirants looking for admissions at various B-schools this year? Why does it make sense to an aspirant to pursue MBA? What benefits can they draw?

Answer:  My advice to the MBA aspirants is that you must be determinant with specific reference to getting into a good quality MBA institutes in India and not to settle for a lesser known institute.

The appeal of an MBA from a good B-School is ever lasting. MBA is a preferred degree for fresher’s as they start their career at a much higher level, as well as for experienced students as it helps them to change their career path from technology ladder to a techno manager ladder.

Strategy for Algebra For CAT 2011

Algebra is basically 'word problems'. If you can understand the questions and visualize them, your problem will be solved.

Arithmetic and Algebra make the lion’s share of the Quantitative Ability section of CAT exam. If your weakest area in the Quantitative Ability section happens to be one or both of them, you need to give extra attention to these areas. We have already discussed the details of Arithmetic. In this article we will discuss about the components and preparation strategy for Algebra.

Algebra:-The component

 Linear and quadratic equation, logarithm, progression, binomial theorem, inequalities, permutation and combination, probability, function, set theory etc. are the main components of Algebra.

The Algebra questions of CAT exam are heavily driven by formulae.

This particular part of the Quantitative Ability section is mostly formula driven word problems. Algebra is basically ‘word problems’. If you can understand the questions and visualize them, your problem will be solved..

Algebra preparation for CAT 2010

Algebra preparation is based on keeping the formula in mind and thorough practice. To start with, go through the previous years’ questions of CAT exam to get an idea what kind of questions are generally asked and what are the formulas you will mostly need. After that, take out your school level math books and learn all the algebraic formulae. Algebra depends heavily of usage of formulae. So you need to memorize them all by heart.

Though you can spend a considerable amount of time daily memorizing the formulae, but as long as you don’t practice them, you won’t be able to judge the proper usage. The basic idea is to see a question and remember which formulae/equation to be used here. Practice lot of unsolved questions in your preparation material.

Strategies for practice & solving questions

While solving the questions, you need to first read the question and understand what it is asking. Following that, you should be able to visualize the question and solve it. We would suggest that you read the question slowly, visualize the question (draw neat diagrams/flow charts) and then solve. Remember to solve faster, you need to comprehend better. To comprehend better you need to read slowly. If you read slowly, you would understand the problem better and you would solve faster. This is especially the case with Algebra.

To choose the right option in the questions, you need to follow the Process of Elimination (POE). Algebra is meant to be tackled through answer choices. Prefer the POE (Process of Elimination) to any other method. However, please note that sometimes putting numerical values help faster while in other cases you need to reach some formulated equation before trying the values. Preferred values are -3, -2, -1, 1, 2.
