The country’s higher
education regulator, the University Grants Commission, has categorically said
that the privately-run Indian Institute of Planning and Management, New Delhi,
is NOT recognized by it and not authorized to confer degrees.
Without assigning
reasons for its public notice brought out in newspapers recently, the UGC said,
“It is further clarified for information that IIPM is neither entitled to award
MBA/BBA/BCA degree nor it is recognized by UGC."
Frantic calls by
media to get reaction from management guru Arindam Chaudhuri, who runs the
institute, went unanswered. Even calls to UGC Secretary Niloufer Adil Kazmi’s
office were not returned.
The notice also said
that "IIPM does not have the right of conferring or granting degrees as
specified by the University Grants Commission under section 22(3) of the UGC
Act. It is hereby informed to the public at large and students that IIPM, New Delhi,
is not a University within the meaning of section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956.”
However, when
Hindustan Times Media Limited tried to get in touch with UGC vice-chairman Ved
Prakash, he alleged that the institute is cheating students by advertising its
courses by using the name of UGC, MHRD and AICTE.
According to a
report in Mint, UGC had issued the notice in the last week of July, after the
Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education sent a letter to IIPM on 19
July questioning the authenticity of courses it offers at its Hyderabad branch.
The notice was published as an advertisement in some newspapers.
Though conceding
that the institute wasn’t a university nor was it empowered to award degrees on
its own, IIPM group president for corporate affairs Amit Saxena, in an email to
media, said that IIPM is the on-site academic partner of M S University which
grants its degrees to IIPM students.
