Tips for MBA Students to Make Themselves More Employable

A simple graduation was all that it took to get employed in the 80’s.With growing competition and the rise for skilled talent, that bar was raised to an engineering degree in the 90’s.

Until recently, it was the MBA that was doing the popularity rounds. But with the dawn of the new millennium, even the reputed MBA (with exceptions of those from the pedigreed institutions) seems to be falling short in providing employment to the fresh graduates.

Just getting a Master's of Business Administration (MBA) degree is not enough to get your dream job in modern job market. In this time when MNCs opine that 75% of MBAs are proving nothing but just another brick of wall, they are not employable, one need to have something more than just academics to prove himself unique in crowd. Since the corporate world is too competitive, demanding and dynamic, there are other skills that you should be proficient enough to secure the job of your dreams with a handsome salary. Here are some tips that experts suggest every MBA student, in order to help him/her out to make a better career.

1) Enhance Your Soft Skills – Its Important: It is very important to enhance your communication skills, presentation skills and soft skills. For those who're not confident about their soft skills, joining a finishing school to develop your personality, body language, inter-personal and social interaction skills will be beneficial.

2) Knowledge Building: You should be updated with latest trends in your field. It is important to keep on doing courses to update your knowledge. Participate in all kinds of group activities like group case studies, simulations, industry interaction programs and inter- college level academic and extra-curricular competitions to keep yourself updated.

3) Develop Corporate Awareness – It’s Necessary : An employer is not only looking for a MBA degree but also the application orientation of the student. Students in B-school study the concepts of management in their classes but hardly understand how this knowledge can be applied in real business scenario. Thus there is a gap between theory and knowledge. To be able to bag the coveted job you must understand what business is all about and how you can contribute to the growth of any organization.

4) Develop Leadership Skills: Since you will be hired at a managerial position after completing your MBA, it is very important that you're able to manage a group of people. For that you need to develop leadership skills.

5) Learn to be a Team Player: It is very important that you can work in a team, coordinate with your colleagues, communicate with them effectively and make proper adjustments.

6) Strong Network: To be a successful professional, you must be well connected and have a strong networking with people in your field. Having a good network and being active on social networking sites will be useful for you.

7) Carefully selecting internships and placements: You must select a good/ reputed company in your field for internship as it is the only opportunity where you can exhibit your skills by translating them in performance. At the same time, you learn about a particular industry, how it functions and its operations in detail. Ensure that you select an internship in the same profile or industry you intend to work in future.

Verbal Ability for CAT- Verbal Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning is more about testing your logical ability rather than English knowledge. Rather than mere English knowledge, for the sub section of Verbal Ability, you need to enhance your logical skills.
English, the world’s local language has various intricacies which are tested in all its forms in the CAT exam and other MBA Exams.  Verbal Reasoning is another predominant part of CAT. Verbal Reasoning is more about testing your logical ability rather than English knowledge. For verbal reasoning, you need to have the ability to use logic. Thus, rather than mere English knowledge, for this sub section of Verbal Ability, you need to enhance your logical skills regarding MBA Exams Preparations 2010. A look at the question pattern will help you understand what you can expect and how you shall prepare for the Verbal Reasoning part for MBA Exams Preparations 2010 and specially for the CAT Exam.

Types of questions in Verbal Reasoning
The most common form of questions is that you will be given a paragraph where the sentences will be jumbled. You will have to rearrange the sentences and make the paragraph meaningful. Another type of question that is found in the Verbal Ability section of the CAT exam is paraphrasing a given paragraph. This calls for your understanding of what is given and hence is some what similar to the Reading Comprehension section of the CAT Exam and other MBA Exams.
Since CAT 2006, the questions on Fact, Inference, Judgement became common. In this kind of questions, you will be given a set of sentences and you will have to identify which one is fact, which one is inference and which one is a judgement.

MBA Exams preparations 2010 for Verbal Reasoning
As mentioned earlier, Verbal Reasoning is more about having the logic and clear understanding rather than learning. MBA Preparations will also be on that line. But you can initiate the MBA preparations with the same method as you have done for Reading Comprehension and English Usage parts, i.e. reading. When you read an article or a chapter of a book, you will follow a pattern of the sentences. They will start with an introduction, followed by that would be the main theme. Similarly, in the questions of para jumbling too, you can follow the same. First read the entire paragraph and then find out the link between the sentences. Identify the introductory sentence and you will automatically recognize the order of the paragraph.
Often the first sentence gives an overview that helps in forming the framework of the passage. Transitional words, phrases or paragraphs that change the topic should be checked. Try understanding the type of reasoning used i.e. cause and effect reasoning, hypothesis or model building for your CAT Exam MBA Preparations.
For the paraphrasing questions, the advice is to write a summary of an article or paragraph after you read one. This not only expands your comprehending skill but also helps develop an independent thinking process and your ability to express. After finishing an article, write the gist of that. This will help you know how much you remember of that passage. Write a summary of about 100 to 150 words every day on the editorial as it will help in building thought process.
Fact, Inference and Judgment questions can be dealt totally on your understanding. You can identify a sentence as fact if it gives hard core information, universal or applied truth. Inference sentences can be identified by conclusions drawn on the basis of facts. For e.g. if the sentence starts with ‘So, Thus, Due to’ etc. it can be considered as Inferential sentences. Judgment sentences are easy to identify as it gives the personal opinion. Initially, identification of fact, inference and judgment might be confusing but with regular practice, you will get comfortable in this sort of questions for your MBA Exams Preparations 2010.
Only practice and clear understanding will help you score well in the Verbal Reasoning portion of the section of Verbal Ability section in CAT 2010. For your MBA Preparations, supplement your learning by solving examples from previous exams as well as from books or course material developed by experts exclusively for CAT entrance exam.

AICTE Banned XAT, ATMA A& MICAT as Entry Point To B-Schools

The latest reforms in All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has shocked all the management aspirants across India by banning top MBA entrance exams like XAT, ATMA, and MICAT as entry points to B-schools approved by AICTE. According to new reforms of AICTE Only state government-run management entrance exams such as Maharashtra CET or ICET in Andhra Pradesh, CAT and MAT are now allowed to serve as entry criteria for aspirants of PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma Programs in Management) programs for business institutes.
However, Dr Prabhat Kumar Sahoo, Director and regional officer of AICTE, Western Region has stated that he will be sending in his suggestion to include XAT in the list of approved MBA entrance exams along with CAT and MAT and there is still a chance that it might get accepted. Till the clouds on XAT clear away, all b-schools will have to accept scores of CAT, MAT or state CETs as their entry criteria for their management programmes.
Autonomous Business Schools such as Goa Institute of Management (GIM), SP Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJMR) and National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) in Mumbai, Management Development Institute (MDI) in Gurgaon, and Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA) that had their own admission processes but were offering AICTE-approved PGDM programmes will not conduct separate entrance tests anymore and will accept scores of state CETs, CAT and MAT only.
Since the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are not governed by the AICTE, the new rules will not affect them or their admission processes. B-schools affiliated to different universities or deemed universities such as Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Symbiosis, FMS Delhi or IIFT Delhi will also not be affected by the new regulations, as they are not governed by AICTE.
According to Dr. Sahoo, B-schools who wish to judge students on their specialized skills can always do so at the the GD (general discussion) and PI (personal interview) stage. The move has been made to streamline the process of management entrance and to ensure that seats are filled only on the basis of merit and that quality in education in maintained in all the institutes.

One should wait for next attempt or not????????

"Should I wait for next attempt or get admission in any so called good college with the score I have?"
Its a major question which makes students confused after getting poor result in CAT/MAT/XAT or other MBA entrance tests. If we say about the views of students, a majority thinks about getting admission in any so called good college but if we say about views of experts, they suggest giving one more chance. Why???
It has been observed that maximum students get admission in any so called good college due to two reasons -

1). Mentors at coaching institute suggest the students to do so{ to get admission in the colleges suggested by them}. You know the reality; we don’t feel that we need to explain.

2). Students think about saving one year. They feel; who will wait for next year, let's get admission where ever we get.

As, it has been said above that we don’t feel that it needs to explain first point. {If you are new visitor, please read the previous posts to know the reason.}.
Now let’s move to next point. A majority thinks to get admission only because they want to save time. They think that they cannot wait for next year. Better to get degree and start career. We don’t say you are wrong but please think in this way:-
You have to give equal time for MBA either you go for any average college or any Top ranking college. Now the problem is that you are not going to get admission this year.
So if you get admission this year in any so called good college then let’s check what you give and what you receive....

For any so called good college you need to pay a fee of Rs.7,00,000 + 2 years{almost} + Your efforts = Average Placement of Rs.2.5lac to Rs.3 lac{ highest Rs.7 lac} with some promotional opportunities.

Now if you decide to wait for next chance with a promise that you will score well and get admission in Top ranking colleges then let’s check what you give and what you receive..

Lets take the highest fee you need to pay i.e. Rs.11,00,000{IIM-A}+ 18 months{almost} + your efforts = Average placement of Rs.14.94 lac { 1.5 crore highest} with a lot of promotional opportunities and a much better career.

Thus as the professionals say, one should give one more chance but still you are free to to decide yourself.
Before any decision you make, please ask this question to yourself:-
Do you really want to be an MBA? Why?
Then decide what to do.
There are so many other things to discuss. Wait for next post.

Thank you.
